In early May I met up with the Giants Live team at The Royal Albert Hall for a filming recce. Later in July The Strongman Classic will be filmed at this most regal of locations, as part of the World's Strongest Man series for Channel 5, and it's sure to be something epic.
This really is a full on collision of two very British institutions, and somehow they merge and entwine perfectly... as it often does in the weird and wonderful strength world.
I'll be producing the episode and directing a few crews on the night.
It's another first for the Giants team, and for the sport itself - having evolved from pub car parks to small exhibitions, on to small capacity arenas to one side of a rugby stadium, to bigger gambles that paid off with sell out shows at Sheffield FLY DSA Arena, Leeds First Direct Arena, Manchester MEN Arena and Wembley Arena, to a castle in Yorkshire... And now this... surely a big tick on the bucket list for everyone who is lucky to be involved.
The line up is one of the best there has ever been as well. Two world records are on the line, and easily achievable given the atmosphere that is sure to be nothing less than thrilling on the night - the crowd alone I'm sure will spur on the athletes to lift a few more kilograms than their limit, and grip for a few more seconds longer than normal.
Lost of work to be done between now and July 24th. After that date I'm sure the Giants team will be thinking about their next 'first'... After the Royal Albert Hall though, what would be left?
